Vacation Tans? Good idea or not
Updated: Oct 30, 2019
We’re coming up to that time of year again when many of our clients frantically stuff their holiday attire in a bag, pull their kids out of school and take off for a week vacation. If you’re one of these people then its likely you already know the benefits of getting a spray tan before your trip, and if you’re not then let us enlighten you.
First and foremost, did you know a “base tan” is a myth? Ultraviolet radiation, whether from the sun or a tanning bed, is a carcinogen, just like cigarettes are a carcinogen. Using a tanning bed prior to vacation is only damaging your skin earlier (literally). As for avoiding a sunburn while on vacation- a “base tan” will provide your skin an SPF of 2, which is negligible. Another not so fun fact is people who have ever used a tanning bed have a 67 percent increased risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma and a 29 percent increased risk of developing basal cell carcinoma.
Lisa Chipps, MD, when asked how much her melanoma client could tan her answer was “Go get a spray tan. They’re fabulous now.”
We always recommend 1-2 days before your trip to maximize your tans longevity. And remember, we custom blend our tans so there's no need to "build" your tan. 1 session is enough to get as dark as desired. You'll look like you've returned from your trip before you even go. Or opt for a lighter, natural glow to take the "whitest person on the beach" edge off. It's your tan- you decide.
Aside from the dangers of skin cancer, a spray tan can (and most likely will) make you feel like your sexiest self - and is there any better feeling? Well, yes possibly but for sake of this article- no. My girlfriend and I both got spray tans before our trip to Italy, so the first day after we landed we were on the beach, tanned as heck, and ordering our first round of drinks. I've always felt it lets me maximize my time away because the last thing I'm concerned about is trying to get a tan. As the weeks went on my fake tan faded and my real tan developed. Of course I brought our very own Colour Me Dark self tanner to "top up" my tan so I'd feel even more tanned in my denim shorts and white crop top #Nice #winning #alwayskidding
